Tips' accounting choice may be hiding its true profit from investors
Market pulse
The markets took a decisive step back in the last session, with broad-based selling dragging the Nifty below 24,000 and hitting the banking, IT, and pharma sectors particularly hard. Despite the widespread gloom, several individual stocks bucked the trend, as notable gains in Data Patterns and M&M Financial were overshadowed by a steep sixteen percent plunge in Bandhan Bank.

Normally, companies spread content costs over several quarters through a process called amortization, which means expensing an intangible asset over its useful life. However, investor Kumar Saurabh points out that Tips, a company in the entertainment sector, immediately expenses its entire content investment. This accounting policy makes Tips' margins appear weaker in the release quarter, but subsequent quarters benefit as no further content-related expenses are recorded against that investment. This approach, he suggests, is a key differentiator for Tips compared to its peers.
